GEA Service Project
It’s the holiday season, and most children are thinking about unwrapping presents, eating a big holiday feast, and enjoying time with their family and friends. Some GEA students are thinking about helping others!

Calgary class is a group of Grade 4 students at GEA who had an idea to make the holidays a little brighter for some people. They brainstormed many ideas about what they could do, and decided to make holiday greeting cards for people in a nearby hospital, and to organize a day for GEA students to go Christmas Caroling at the hospital.

Preparations

The first thing we needed to do was write a letter to the nearby hospital and ask them if this was possible, and what time and date could work.

Next, we needed to ask other classes for help. We didn’t want to go caroling by ourselves! Mickey worked on writing the speech that we would make to other GEA afterschool classes.

We also needed a lot of help making nice holiday greeting cards for the patients at the hospital. So Yia and Kristi made a video explaining the cards for our Kinder students to watch

Mickey is working on the speech that the Calgary students will make to the other afterschool classes to encourage them to come to the caroling.

Yia and Kristi are practicing the speech.

Ian has written a great letter to the Manager of Noble Hospital to arrange the event. The next step is to meet with the Manager and look around to help us make our plans.

We visited Noble Hospital to meet with the Manager and plan the location of the event and go over logistics. We think it will be a great success!

We went to other classes to explain our project and ask for their help in making cards and coming to the event.

Yia wrote a letter to the Moms that we could send out to explain the event and ask for their participation.

Mickey, David, and Ian made a flyer encouraging students to join us as well. Here are the drafts they went through to make it.

David wrote a press release to raise awareness of the event, and hopefully to inspire other kids to follow Calgary Class’s lead and organize their own service project!

Ian called Kids Times Newspaper to find out where we could send the press release.

Finally, the big day had arrived.

On Saturday, December 14, about 20 GEA students arrived at GEA to practice the carols and eat snacks, and then walk over to the hospital to sing for the patients.

We had about an hour to practice the songs all together.
